Product Review: Kinky Curly Curling Custard aka KCCC

Here's what Kinky Curly has to say:

"Kinky-Curly custard gel is a herbal conditioner that's suitable for all hair types. It smoothes the cuticle and easily detangles hair. Made from natural ingredients, this moisturizing hair gel nourishes and strengthens hair. It's infused with agave nectar's humectant properties to define your curls, give them weight, smooth frizz and offer long-lasting hold. The gel also adds a healthy shine without making your hair look greasy. This alcohol-free hair gel can be used as a leave-on conditioner for thick or curly hair. It's free of parabens and sodium lauryl sulfate."

Ingredients:
botanical infusion of water, horsetail, chamomile, nettle and marshmallow, organic aloe vera juice, agave nectar extract, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin e), pectic, citric acid, potassium sorbate and natural fragrance

Read on for my review!

My experience:

Texture: Sticky, gooey, gloppy. Like Slime. Good slime. If applied to wet hair, it can dry slightly hard or stiff. This is easily remedied.

Scent: KCCC has a very heavy three-day-old cake batter scent. It dissipates, mostly, after application. Its texture, upon application, is very slimy.

Price: $17 for 8oz. Currently on sale at target for $15.29. It's pricey, but you need very little. I would go in on it with a friend, because I could go a year without making a dent in an 8oz jar.

My review:
When I lived in Chicago, KCCC was the ONLY product that actually worked on my new growth. I really like that both this and her Knot Today leave in are glycerin free. It provides definition, elongation, frizz reduction, volume reduction and humidity control in humid climates. It is better than anything I have found thus far at doing that. It should not be used for those looking for volume or curl enhancement.

It is for you if:
- you have naturally curly (3c+) hair
- you live in a climate with a high dew point
- you want curl elongation, frizz reduction and volume reduction
- you want a medium, flexible hold
- you do not mind a long drying time

It is not for you if:
- you just want curl definition, not curl reduction
- you want volume
- you are sensitive to sweet scents
- you don't like slimy things :)

My suggestions for use are:
- apply it to towel dried hair, making sure not to touch it. It will dry straighter, smoother, and more tangle free than your natural hair. It will take longer to dry than your hair sans product.

Bottom line:
My Porous, 3c new growth will forever rely on this stuff to smooth, define, protect, and conceal. This is an amazing product if your hair goals are in line with its abilities. A+

Some noteworthy ingredients:
Slippery Elm:
Slippery Elm is classified by the FDA as a demulcent, aka something that forms a "soothing film" over a mucous membrane. If you have ever encountered it in powdered form, you know that adding any liquid causes it to become a sticky, jelly, goo thing that DOES.NOT.DRY. Both KCCC and KCKT (Kinky Curly Knot Today) make use of Slippery Elm.

Aloe Vera: My hair has always responded well to aloe. Aloe is a weird soothing thing that science doesn't entirely understand (haha, science!). I find using it straight from the plant really gives great softness and volume to the hair.

Marshmallow Root is another demulcent, albeit less effective, when digested, than slippery elm.
